Sitting at the Frankfurt airport the other day it finally dawned on me that I may not know as much as I thought I did about VPN services. The VPN that I have installed on my computer was not accepted by the airport’s WiFi network which surprised me, angered me, and made me ask myself, was ist vpn?. How does a VPN actually work and why are they only allowed on certain networks? I decided to do a little research and found out that there are many advantages to using a good VPN service. Here are the top 5.
1. Creating a secure connection –
The security that comes from using a VPN service is top-notch. All communication that travels between the user and the VPN servers is fully encrypted making it almost impossible for hackers – and your ISP – to see your internet traffic.
2. Increasing anonymity & privacy –
In the wake of net neutrality’s death, it is more important than ever to remain anonymous while surfing online. Using a VPN keeps users identifying information secret in two ways: encrypting user information and not keeping logs of user data and searches. This is important to protect users from identity theft and other known vulnerabilities, such as corporate tracking and throttled internet connections.
3. Avoiding Tracking of all kinds –
Another important reason for using a VPN is to stay clear of targeted advertising and the ‘internet search bubble’. In today’s online landscape the internet is no longer a free and clear space for people of all kinds to access information equally. Information that comes from various sources is tailored to specific people based on specific criteria and filters that have been created through observing user search habits. To avoid having the internet show you what it thinks you want to see (including ads that are targeted to your search patterns), it is important to use a VPN so that you are not tracked.
4. Getting past censorship and regional blocks –
One of the most obvious reasons that many people have for using a VPN service is the inherent ability of such a service to circumvent location-related restrictions and blocks on various types of content. The fact that a VPN can have servers all around the world means that users of the service can ‘adopt’ the IP of a server in almost any country of their choosing. That’s a good thing if you live in a country with heavy internet restrictions like Turkey where Wikipedia is banned!
5. File sharing is safe, convenient and secure –
Another lesser known benefit to using a VPN service is that while using a VPN to connect several users on the same network, it is very easy to share large amounts of information without worrying about tying up (or using up) internet upload and download quotas that come from the ISP.
Was ist ein VPN? Well, in short, it is an encrypted virtual network that creates a direct connection between the VPN servers and its users, allowing for an anonymous browsing experience. Glad I asked!
